The following story was written by a Watts Community Youth Journalist as a part of the EveryDay Heroes Leadership Camp project that focused on community media.
One mounting problem in Los Angeles is trash in alleyways.
It degrades the city’s image and affects citizens’ lives. These overlooked areas have turned into trash havens with increasing amounts of refuse, used furniture, and junk machinery.
A local example is the view in a resident’s home running back to an alley.
A once-quiet passage rapidly became a catch for overflowing trash bins, thrown-out furniture,
and regular household items.
The accumulation not only degrades the appearance of the neighborhood but also brings possible health risks in the form of pests in the unsanitary conditions.
A 2021 report from Los Angeles City Controller Ron Galperin said illegal trash dumping in the city increased 450% from 2016 to 2020 and up to 600% in some areas.
Illegal trash dumping within Los Angeles rose steadily from 2016 to 2020 according to a 2021 report from Los Angeles City Controller office.
While this problem might seem minor compared to the whole world I think more people need to take it seriously.
While more is at risk the city doesn’t want to address this issue properly, except by increasing the frequency of trash pickups and some new strategies in managing waste refuse.
Residents are frustrated with the solutions currently being proposed, and direct residents in particular want to see something more effective.
There is a growing demand for an integrated approach to combating the trash problem.
Many are advocating for increasing programs on recycling, a more frequent collection of trash, and organized community clean-up initiatives.
Comprehensive intervention is necessary to battle the waste issue not only to achieve cleanliness at the present but also to attack the roots of the problem.
However, until permanent remedies are found by the city administration, residents need to be proactive and optimistic about improvement.
Alleyways have to be returned to a much cleaner and more presentable state,
highlighting the spirit of Los Angeles.
Public involvement and awareness is essential for sustaining cleaner, healthier alleyways.
